Man Shot at Birmingham’s Circo Loco in the Arena

Birmingham's Circo Loco in the Arena, 2012

Ibiza’s Circo Loco parties are famous for their hedonistic, free-spirited vibes, but the mood turned dark at Birmingham, England’s Circo Loco in the Arena event last night when a man was shot outside the venue, the Rainbow Warehouse (via DJ Mag). Initial reports from freelance photojournalist Michael Scott on Demotix said that an unidentified 22-year-old man had been shot in the stomach when “a door was rushed”; BBC later confirmed that the victim is 35 and remains in critical condition. In plea for information from witnesses or acquaintances of the shooter, West Midlands Police noted, “The motive for the attack remains unclear but initial enquiries indicate this was a targeted attack and the gunman escaped on foot.”

This morning, the Circo Loco in the Arena organization announced, “Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have to cancel today’s event. We’ll have more information on tickets & refunds this week.” The Sunday lineup was to feature Jamie Jones, Art Department, Carl Craig, Move D, and Adam Shelton and Subb An. Saturday night’s event featured Circo Loco regulars Seth Troxler, Tania Vulcano, Kerri Chandler, Cassy, Davide Squillace, Tale of Us, and Apollonia, and is reported to have continued without interruption despite the violence outside the venue.

The shooting was an ugly reminder of a number of violent incidents that marred electronic-music events last summer, including a nine-person stabbing at a Swedish House Mafia concert in Dublin and a three-person stabbing at a Swedish House Mafia concert in Buckinghamshire.
