Beck Remixes JJ DOOM’s ‘Banished’ With Mellow, Tweaked-Out Aplomb

Beck JJ Doom banished remixed keys to the kuff butter edition

Exactly a year after JJ DOOM released their debut album, Keys to the Kuffs, the duo comprising masked rap villain DOOM and astral-traveling beatsmith Jneiro Jarel are celebrating all over again. On August 20, Lex Records will release the “Butter Edition” of the LP featuring remixes from an ace crew of musical astronauts. While the original’s guest list is formidable — Damon Albarn, Beth Gibbons, and Goodie Mob’s Khujo — the new version is hardly lacking in star power.

Beck, Thom Yorke, Clams Casino, and Dave Sitek are lending their talents to reworking the past, while JJ DOOM lace the 23-track set with some new material as well, including a Del the Funky Homosapien collaboration. Though we’ve heard a handful of the additions already, Lex has held onto Beck’s reimagining of “Banished” until now. Hear that below, wherein the mercurial Los Angeleno takes the song in a mellower direction, albeit with a few instrumental freakouts interspersed throughout. The original cut can be heard below as well.
