Watch Animal Collective Charm the Ropes Off of ‘Monkey Riches’

Animal Collective, "Monkey Riches," video, tour dates, 'Centipede Hz'

Animal Collective are ready to get back out on the road, and they’ve shared a mind-bending new video just in time to get fans in the right mood.

The Brooklyn via Baltimore ensemble announced in March they would be canceling the remainder of their North American tour, citing singer Avey Tare’s “intense case of strep throat.” They later rescheduled some of the shows. But then — shades of Morrissey — came another round of cancellations. Now AnCo have revealed a fresh batch of tour dates, beginning at MusicFestNW in Portland on September 6 and running through December 8 in Nashville. Previous tourmate Dan Deacon will even join them for a couple of the dates.

At the same time, the group has released a video for “Monkey Riches,” from last year’s SPIN Essential album Centipede Hz. Our reviewer said the song “adds element after element and noise after noise to a frenzy that only gets resolved by a fragmented glitchstep breakdown.” The video, directed by Jack Kubizne (Merriweather Post Pavilion‘s “Brother Sport,” Cloud Nothings’ “Stay Useless”), also builds upon itself only to break away. An old man with amazing facial expressions works his making-ropes-dance magic in consistently more outlandish ways, until Kubizne shows off his previously displayed chops at psychedelia-smeared animation.

“The old man has some cosmic humor in his lessons so that’s why he might come off a little cruel, but really he’s trying to teach,” Kubizne told the Creators Project. We’d tell you more, but we don’t want to spoil it any further.
