Randy Travis Critical Condition Hospitalized Heart

Iconic country singer Randy Travis has been admitted to an Texas hospital and is in critical condition due to a heart condition. According to a statement by spokesman Kirt Webster, the 54-year-old star “recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy,” an infection in which the muscles surrounding the organ are weakened and enlarged, leading to a slowed heartbeat and possibly outright failure. He was admitted on Sunday, July 7.

Travis has been on the road of late, as CNN notes. His most recent stop was Chicago on June 29, and he was due to play Deadwood, South Dakota on Wednesday, July 10. He’d appeared in good health at business meetings over the weekend, but “on Sunday, it him,” read Webster’s release. His condition can be caused by any number of viruses, but lhigh blood pressure and excessive use of alcohol are among known exacerbators.

The singer behind such enduring hits as “Deeper Than the Holler” and “Forever and Ever, Amen” had a particularly rough 2012, racking up multiple arrests for public drunkenness and assault. Travis is a six-time Grammy winner and has released upwards of 20 albums since debuting in 1978 under his original name with Randy Traywick. Travis was born and raised in North Carolina. He has discussed his battle with Lyme disease as well.
