Mudhoney Will Shred the Space Needle for Sub Pop Celebration

Mudhoney Seattle Space Needle Live Play Sub Pop

Sub Pop O.G.s and Washington garage-punk mainstays Mudhoney will be playing atop Seattle’s iconic Space Needle this month in conjunction with their label’s Silver Jubilee festival. On Thursday, July 11, the band will rock this towering landmark despite singer Mark Arm’s earlier claims that “I Like It Small.” The quartet is celebrating 25 years of existence and playing behind their ninth album, Vanishing Point, released in April.

Mudhoney’s website notes, “It’s unclear if this is the true top, or the observation deck. It’s also unclear if there will be any tickets for the event. Regardless, the performance will be broadcast on the radio.” Indeed, local public radio station KEXP will share the thing as it’s happening, according to the band’s Twitter. Of course, the attraction for fans would be mostly visual, but a Wilhelm scream or two might add some palpable drama.

Clearly to the decision to play Space Needle is a pointed affront to Jay-Z since his plans to play on a dangerously high surface in New York City were recently shot down. The rap elder statesman and grunge godfathers have been caught up in a heated, very public feud since never.

In related news, Sub Pop has just released Sub Pop 2013: First Place Losers, a free compilation (via Amazon) that includes “I Like It Small” alongside highlights from Daughn Gibson, No Age, METZ, the Postal Service, and others. Arm also appears on the latest limited 7-inch platter from the Melvins, Tribute to the Scientists, and the band contributed a live recording of “Fix Me” to the Bash 13 10-inch compilation.
