Morrissey Postpones More Shows, This Time Citing Food Poisoning

Morrissey

About a year ago, Morrissey announced an unconventional U.S. tour that would have included a date with the Stooges. Then he pushed back the gigs to spend time with his ailing mother. Then he canceled shows, citing a bleeding ulcer and offering a characteristically playful explanation. Then he canceled more shows. Then he canceled more shows. Some rescheduling happened, he missed a late-night TV show for vegetarian reasons, he suffered pneumonia, he canceled the rest of the U.S. tour. He was, he told us he was told, close to death.

But then, miracle of miracles, Morrissey announced he would be going on the road again, this time for a series of dates in South America. Obviously, that wasn’t going to happen. The cited reasons are once again unfortunately health-related: Slicing Up Eyeballs points to translations of various media reports and promoter statements in Chile and Peru that indicate the 14-date tour has been postponed because Morrissey and fellow band members suffered from “severe food poisoning.”

Morrissey has yet to make a statement via his usual channels. Chile’s Radio Cooperativa quotes someone involved with the shows as saying that Morrissey and about eight others went to a restaurant outside the recommended path, which, yeah, that’s one way of getting food poisoning. More worrying still: Moviestar Arena in Santiago, Chile, has posted a statement saying that Morrissey has gone back to the United KIngdom to receive care from his “personal physicians.”

PETA earlier this week announced it had received a large donation from Morrissey that would be financing ads against the cruelty of foie gras. The former Smiths frontman also has a concert movie on the way, Morrissey 25: Live.

It’s tempting to bring up “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore.” But it isn’t funny anymore, especially when health is involved.
