La Luz channel the heart-swelling aesthetic of Phil Spector’s girl groups, employing crisp four-part harmonies, choreographed dance moves, and pastel color patterns. In the video for new single “Brainwash,” the Seattle quartet also imports the more sinister aspects of the ’50s and ’60s. Footage of the all-female band performing on television is interspersed with apocalyptic clips that recall Cold War-era paranoia and groupthink: Mushroom clouds spread across the sky and not-so-subliminal messages (“OBEY!”) flash on the screen. Revisit the 20th century by watching the video above.
