Nearly four months after Brazilian electro band CSS debuted their dancehall-infused track “Hangover,” Brooklyn DJ/producer Dre Skull dials the song back on his new remix, turning it into a reggae-pop ballad. The new rendition gives a plaintive edge to frontwoman Lovefoxxx’s vocals from the original, which was co-written with Rancid’s Tim Armstrong and produced by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek. Hangover or not, the remix wouldn’t make for a good office party.
“After spending some time with the vocals, I was really hearing a slowed down vibe and decided accentuate a halftime feel,” Dre Skull told Noisey. “I also liked the playful, dubby feel of the original production, and having been a longtime fan of bands like The Flying Lizards that where experimental with strong dub influences, I really took that idea as a guide to explore a dreamy, dubbed out soundscape while trying to keep the core of a catchy pop song embedded within.”
Remixing CSS is just the latest in a string of highlights for Breaking Out star Dre Skull (a.k.a. Andrew Hershey), who’s collaborated with Purity Ring’s Megan James, co-produced Snoop Lion’s Reincarnated with Diplo, and manned the boards for Vybz Kartel’s hit LP Kingston Story. (On a semi-related note, Kartel’s only recent highlight is getting acquitted in one of two murder trials he faces.) Skull’s “Hangover” remix and CSS’ fourth album, Planta, are both available now.
