Hear Arctic Monkeys Trip Out on Non-Album Cut ‘2013’

Arctic Monkeys 2013 AM

Recording in Joshua Tree seems to have had an influence on Arctic Monkeys. Today they released the psychedelic “2013,” a non-album track from their upcoming LP AM and the B-side to “Do I Wanna Know?” It’s a riff-heavy trip that’d be at home in the ’70s, but it’s 2013, as frontman Alex Turner repeats between verses mentioning Instagram and time machines.

The simple guitar line propels the song, even when it slows in the middle into a swirly chill-out. Just when you think they’re heading toward a fade-out, the song blasts off with a tambourine-heavy outro. The lyrics of “2013” might someday feel dated (hopefully when we have flying cars), but the music’s old-school influence ensures it’ll have lasting appeal.

AM, which features contributions from Josh Homme, is due out September 10 on Domino.
