Janelle Monae Fearlessly Freaks Out on Footloose Clapper ‘Dance Apocalyptic’

Janelle Monáe

Janelle Monáe reminds us once again that “the booty don’t lie.” On brassy Erykah Badu collaboration “Q.U.E.E.N.,” recently remixed by none other than Prince, the genre-mashing singer asked defiantly if she’s a “freak.” On “Dance Apocacalyptic,” the latest track to surface from her upcoming album The Electric Lady, Monáe’s more carefree about freakiness. “You’re not afraid to freak out,” she enthuses atop deceptively cheery strums, popping a wheelie on Armageddon in between lyrical references to songs where women’s voices aren’t heard (“Bandz a Make Her Dance,” “Smokin’ in the Boys Room”). It’s a bit too easy to imagine Footloose-style dance sequences, but the song is in the spirit of the Smiths’ love-or-the-bomb “Ask.” Bailar a la bamba.

Watch a trailer for the “Dance Apocalyptic” video below. The Electric Lady will be out September 10 on Bad Boy/Universal, as Monáe recently announced on Instagram. Also below find a video wherein Monáe describes how paintings were the true inspiration behind the new LP, which features Prince as well as Miguel. Other than that, details of the album have been kept close to the tux.
