Diddy Inks Deal With Time Warner Cable to Launch Music Channel
Sean Combs describes Revolt TV as the "first channel of the social media age"
Sean “Diddy” Combs says he’s “making history right now” in the above video, which shows him signing a deal with Time Warner Cable. Fair enough: Terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed, but it will make the rapper, producer, actor, and entrepreneur’s Revolt TV one of the biggest cable-TV launches ever when it starts airing this fall, according to a statement.
Diddy first revealed plans for Revolt TV last year, envisioning a channel that will emphasize music, live content, and a strong social media presence. Comcast announced last year it would distribute Revolt TV, which the New York Post reports will give the station access to roughly 10 million homes. The Time Warner deal will reportedly include distribution to “some of” the company’s 12 million subscribers.
“This is a landmark distribution deal that demonstrates Time Warner Cable’s commitment to bringing a platform for music artists and fans to their subscribers,” Combs said in a statement. “It positions Revolt to come out of the gate strong, and we look forward to igniting the passion of initial audiences across the U.S.”
As London’s Guardian reports, Combs argues Revolt TV can fill the music-channel hole left when MTV stopped showing videos about seven years ago (the channel’s planned 12-hour music video marathon notwithstanding). Speaking at festival in Cannes this week, Combs reportedly said his network will be ” “first channel of the social media age.” Combs added, “We will cover music in a journalistic way, covering it in a way in that it has not been covered before, and we will celebrate creative and cinematography.” If Diddy can do it, that would be historic indeed.
