See Vampire Weekend and Yeah Yeah Yeahs Hone New Material on ‘Jools Holland’

Vampire Weekend

Two New York City bands with new albums crossed the pond for performances on BBC’s Later… With Jools Holland last night, and online videos show two contrasting approaches. Vampire Weekend, whose Modern Vampires of the City isn’t out until May 14, performed the record’s “Diane Young” and “Unbelievers,” complete with pitch-shifting effects on the former and a bassist-led clap-along on the latter. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, whose Mosquito arrived last month, played “Sacrilege” (below), with frontwoman Karen O in a theatrical, bedazzled red suit and a gospel choir on hand to help push the song to its ecstatic conclusion. According to Pitchfork, Yeah Yeah Yeahs also ran through their record’s title track, but the video isn’t available in the United States. Both bands did more than just straightforward renditions of their songs, which didn’t even need the help, but O is a stagewoman extraordinaire.
