Phases & Repetition, the soon-to-be-reissued first album from ’90s psych-grinders La Machine, was “a reaction to a self-imposed fascist mindset,” according to La Machine idea man (and Six Finger Satellite member) Rick Pelletier. “After punishing small numbers of unwilling participants in the Six Finger Satellite group for seven years I set out to boil down my idea of music to its most basic form… Bass, drums and vocal squeezed through a handful of tape delays and phasers,” he says in a statement. “Add to that a pinch of mind expanding chemicals and voilà, there you have the very first of many La Machine recorded LPs.”
On July 16, Castle Face Records will rerelease Phases & Repetition, which has been remastered and repressed from the original cassette tape master. Label head and Thee Oh Sees frontman John Dwyer oversaw the process, and now he’s shared “Sucks to Come Down,” a grimy groove featured on the full-length, to tease the project. As Pelletier puts it, “The track ‘Sucks to Come Down’ is a love song to that point in time when the sun is rising and your high is waning. No truer words have been spoken.”
