Kate Boy Tease U.S. Tour With Head-Clearing ‘The Way We Are’

Kate Boy

Kate Boy won’t quiet comparisons to fellow Swedes the Knife with their latest single, but they’re right to take that as a compliment. “The Way We Are,” coming out to coincide with Kate Boy’s U.S. tour dates next month, continues the electro-pop outfit’s brief but head-turning run of elastic yet dark-hued songs like “In Your Eyes” and the title track of debut EP Northern Lights. Kate Boy’s latest is slightly more aggressive, with hard-charging synths and fronwoman Kate Akhurst’s vocals shifting effortlessly from a breathy purr to a full-throated howl. “Just gotta get this outta my head,” Akhurst sings, her initial murmur here also recalling Swedish singer and songwriter Lykke Li. As the Knife move away from traditional pop structures, groups like Kate Boy and CHVRCHES are filling the void; we’ve seen this before, as Radiohead’s millennial turn toward electronics left the world with legions of bands that still sounded like The Bends, but the indications this time around are more hopeful so far.

Listen to “The Way We Are” over at Stereogum.
