Download Tree’s Soulful ‘Sunday School II: When Church Lets Out’ Mixtape

Tree is an old soul in the Chicago rap scene. He self-describes his music as “soul trap,” which means that he takes samples by artists such as Etta James and Curtis Mayfield and chops them into productions that are rawer than, say, Kanye West’s beats of yore. But he’s an even more arresting rapper — Tree’s music is sobering and blunt, and he lays himself bare, encouraging listeners to examine societal and personal problems. Like the old music of spiritual antecedents like David Banner or Freeway, Sunday School II is equally uncompromising and comforting in its honesty.
