Forgive Bernard Sumner’s Leaden Dance Moves on ‘Kimmel,’ Please
New Order frontman's been doing them 27 years now
Twenty-seven years later and New Order are still caught in that “Bizarre Love Triangle.” The dance-pop pioneers, currently in the midst of a quick North American jaunt that includes two performances at this year’s Coachella, dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night (April 16) to revive the aforementioned 1986 classic single and show off “I’ll Stay With You,” the vintage-sounding first track off New Order’s recently released Lost Sirens collection. Frontman Bernard Sumner’s voice still glides brilliantly, as if being delivered by an omniscient narrator, but the 57-year-old singer’s stage moves — the shimmy, the twirl — are (understandably) a little limp. Sumner pulls off the distinguished statesmen look when he’s strapped to a guitar, though, reminding us why we’ve stayed with New Order after all this time.
