Black Lips Drop Driving Anthem ‘Cruising’ for Adult Swim Rock Comp

Black Lips 'Cruising' Adult Swim Garage Compilation Williams Street Records

On May 6, Adult Swim’s intermittent music imprint Williams Street Records will release Garage Swim, a free compilation of scruffy pop jams from the likes of King Tuff, JEFF the Brotherhood, King Khan, and our Breaking Out buddy Mikal Cronin. Yesterday we heard Thee Oh See’s excellent addition to the set, “Devil Again,” and today Rolling Stone has a fresh one from Black Lips called “Cruising.”

The track kicks off with a gritty-but-easy skulk as the Atlanta flower-punks sing about surviving a likely intoxicated late-night drive: “Slow down, signal every single turn / Easy on the gas so the rubber don’t burn.” A few hard lefts into fast-paced riffage convey what’s at risk: “I’ve gotta get home / No, I can’t get caught.” Depending on your point of view, it’s either a helpful rundown of safe motoring practices or a wildly irresponsible paean to driving under the influence. Either way, well, it rocks. Stream the song here.

Most recently, we heard Black Lips deliver a faithful rendition of Willy Nelson and Waylon Jenning’s “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.” Oh, and we ate snails with them on a cruise ship, too. In 2012, Williams Street released the insanely good Killer Mike LP, R.A.P. Music.
