Hear the Strokes’ Falsetto-Kissed Record Store Day B-Side ‘Fast Animals’

The Strokes

The Strokes know their French well. In 2006, Versailles-hailing band Phoenix foreshadowed their own current festival-headliner status with It’s Never Been Like That, an album that lacquered their previous yacht-pop glossiness onto the gritty angles of downtown New York City — and specifically, the Strokes. Now the Strokes’ fifth album, Comedown Machine, is out tomorrow, and “Fast Animals,” the B-side to a Record Store Day 7-inch also featuring rough-hewn video selection“All the Time,” neatly returns la faveur (via Stereogum). With Comedown Machine‘s “One Way Trigger” falsetto relegated to tasteful decor, the track is all sleek lines and elegantly grotty guitar tones until a burbling synth breakdown. As LP also-rans go, it’s a pretty decent consolation prize.
