Hear DJ Rashad’s ‘Let it Go,’ a Lonely Junglist Daydream

DJ Rashad 'Let it Go' Rollin' EP Hyperdub

Last year, SPIN took a feature-deep dive into Chicago’s explosive footwork scene in part inspired by the movement’s musical crown jewel, the Essential TEKLIFE Vol. 1 — Welcome to the Chi by DJ Rashad. That album also fueled a Breaking Out profile on the artist himself, and wound up topping our Best Dance Albums of 2012 list, plus was our fourth best record of the year, period. Well, Rashad is back in action having recently announced his forthcoming Buggin’ EP for U.K. electronic outpost Hyperdub (Burial, Kode9, Zomby). The four-song set (track list below) is due out March 19 and we can now hear the first taste of it, “Let it Go.”

The track opens with a frenetic burst of old school junglist drums but quickly evolves — there are hesitant strings, house-y wails, halftime beats, and crystalline sequencers. As busy as the song is, it beams beautiful loneliness and is yet another feather in the already stuffed cap of DJ Rashad.
