Neil Young and Crazy Horse Cover Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born in the USA’

Last night’s Grammy Awards ceremony wasn’t the only event full of star-studded performances this weekend. As the AP reports, Bruce Springsteen got a chance to bask in a tribute concert on Friday night when he was honored as MusiCares person of the year.

A variety of Grammy performers took the stage at Los Angeles Convention Center to salute the Boss, including Sting, Elton John, Mumford & Sons, Mavis Staples and Zac Brown; Alabama Shakes opened the evening with “Adam Raised a Cain,” and Tom Morello joined My Morning Jacket’s Jim James on “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” also a staple for Morello’s best-known band Rage Against the Machine. Patti Smith, John Legend, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Jackson Browne, Kenny Chesney, Natalie Maines, and Ben Harper were also among the performers.

But according to Rolling Stone, at least, Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s “Born in the USA” stood out from the tribute pack. RS and Hidden Track point to a terrible-quality video of the rendition, but the audio alone suggests Are You Passionate? was a question no one asked Neil last night. Also below, via Blogness on the Edge of Town, check out the Boss himself’s “Born to Run” (a clip of Mumford & Sons’ “I’m on Fire” has been perhaps mercifully taken down). As Consequence of Sound notes, if this year is anything like years past, we might be able to expect a release of the MusicCares tribute concert on DVD. But for now we can fast-forward to Neil.
