Hip-hop fans woke up to a bit of good news this morning, when the exceptionally talented Miami rapper and Maybach Music soldier Gunplay tweeted that his armed robbery charges have been dropped.

SPIN confirmed with Michael Grieco, Gunplay’s South Florida-based defense attorney, that the case has indeed been dismissed. According to Grieco, the charges were dropped this morning by the state attorney in Miami-Dade county. Per Grieco, the judge on the case compelled the state to move forward with the case or drop the charges, and they chose the latter. Grieco also said that Gunplay — whose government name is Richard Morales Jr. — has no outstanding criminal charges.

The robbery charges stemmed from an April 2012 incident in which Gunplay was caught on camera pulling a gun on his accountant before allegedly stealing a gold chain and cell phone. According to TMZ, the victim — Turron Woodside — refused to cooperate with authorities despite a subpoena, which ground the investigation to a halt and eventually led to its demise.
In a moment of (perhaps ill-advised) sincerity, Gunplay told TMZ he’d be celebrating his freedom by smoking weed: “Today I am grateful and blessed that the case was dismissed… I plan on picking up where I left off with my music and making hits with my upcoming debut album… The first thing I am going to do today is smoke a joint, relax, play video games, and just be with my loved ones.”
