mumford & sons, grammys, album of the year, babel

Hope you’re happy, America. Mumford & Sons walked away with Album of the Year at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards Sunday night (February 10). The English four-piece’s Babel beat out SPIN’s Album of the Year, Frank Ocean’s channel ORANGE, which had to settle for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

The Black Keys, Gotye, Skrillex, Jay-Z, and Kanye West tied for the most wins, pulling in three statues each. The Black Keys earned Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance (both for “Lonely Boy”), and also grabbed Best Rock Album for El Camino. So, if you count Dan Auerbach’s Producer of the Year Grammy, he ends up with the night’s most awards. Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” was presented with Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and the Belgium-born Aussie also claimed Best Alternative Music Album for Making Mirrors.

Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Niggas in Paris” collected Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance, while their Frank Ocean-featuring “No Church in the Wild” snatched Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. And now Skrillex can add Best Dance/Electronica Album (Bangarang), Best Dance Recording (“Bangarang” featuring Sirah), and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical (“Promises [Skrillex & Nero Remix]”) to his trophy collection.

Other notable victories: fun. were dubbed Best New Artist and their inescapable hit “We Are Young” was declared Song of the Year; Mumford also won Best Long Form Video for Big Easy Express; Drake’s Take Care was the Recording Academy’s pick for Best Rap Album; Miguel’s “Adorn” nabbed Best R&B Song; and Usher went home with Best R&B Performance for “Climax.”

SPIN correctly predicted several winners, including Best Rock Album, Best R&B Song, Best Rap Song, Best Dance/Electronica Album, Best Recording Package, and Best Short Form Music Video.
