See Caitlin Rose Get a DUI in ‘Only a Clown’ Video

Caitlin Rose 'Only a Clown' Video Jayhawks

“I used to be fast and loose with the term ‘country’ because I didn’t know what else to call my music. I still don’t,” Nashville upstart Caitlin Rose told SPIN in our January Breaking Out profile. “I can’t really fit anywhere else, so I just take the corner booth.” But in the first music video to come from her March 5 ATO long-player The Stand-In, Rose and a group of pals pretty much run the entire bar.

The home-style video footage portrays a night out on the town that begins with a karaoke party, includes a disco ball theft, and ends with the sweet-voiced singer getting arrested for driving under the influence. The song is “Only a Clown,” a co-write with the Jayhawks’ Gary Louris that’s “about the person who doesn’t have any fun at the party, but still sends you a thank you note,” Rose told Billboard.

Barring the shots of her singing and smoking in the back seat of a cop cruiser, the clip feels real, which heightens the thrill of witnessing this 25-year-old’s big adventure. As for the rest of The Stand-In, Rose explains that it’s inspired by “Ne’er do wells, and motherfuckers who leave whenever they feel like it.” Her 2011 album Own Side Now was one of our Best Country & Americana Albums of that year.
