My Bloody Valentine Might Pull a Bowie and Drop New Album Any Day

Is My Bloody Valentine about to go all Radiohead on us? The 22 years of waiting for a new MBV album since Loveless might finally be coming to an end as Kevin Shields told fans at a U.K. concert this weekend that the band’s long-awaited new LP “might be out in two or three days,” NME reports. Which is today, or tomorrow, or maybe the day after, but definitely soon.

Of course, Shields has made these kinds of new albums claims before. This time, though, he has hard evidence: My Bloody Valentine opened their Brixton Electric gig with a supposed new album cut called “Rough Song” on Saturday, but footage of the song has already been yanked from YouTube after a copyright claim.

Back in late December, the band revealed on their Facebook page, “We finished mastering the new album!” If My Bloody Valentine did release their new album either tomorrow or the day after, it wouldn’t be all that abnormal: David Bowie debuted a new single with news that an album is on the way earlier this month. Justin Timberlake followed suit (and tie) just days later. And back in October, Godspeed You! Black Emperor ended a decade-long gap between albums when they released ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! at the merch table at their concert in BostonNo announcement or press release about the LP was made beforehand; it just arrived. Shields could also drop the album digitally on a pay-what-you-want scale, a la Radiohead. Or he could just not release it any time soon, which wouldn’t be out of character. So is My Bloody Valentine’s follow-up to Loveless coming this week? We’ll just have to wait and see. But they definitely have our attention.
