J Dilla’s Up-for-Auction Vinyl Collection Is Actually Affordable

j dilla ebay auction record vinyl collection

For fans of J Dilla, this promises to trump any Record Store Day reissue: According to BrooklynVegan, James Yancey’s personal record collection will be sold on eBay by his mother Maureen Yancey, a.k.a. Ma Dukes. As the story goes, J Dilla saved his vinyl collection and moved them to a storage facility after his basement was flooded in Detroit. Soon after in 2004, the Donuts producer relocated to Los Angeles, leaving behind his records in Michigan, where they remained until the Yancey family recovered the storage unit after returning to Detroit last year. The collection contains albums that Dilla personally purchased, with each LP accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Ma Dukes.

It’ll only cost $29.99 to grab a record from the Dilla stash, and Ma Dukes will send out a random vinyl to each buyer. However, all the really good stuff — the J Dilla test pressings, personal recordings, personal items and tapes, as well as posthumous releases — will be kept by the family for inclusion in a possible hip-hop museum. So even if the collection sells out at least we know there’s some unreleased Dilla tracks on the horizon.

All proceeds from the auction will benefit the J Dilla foundation, so check out the auction’s eBay page now.
