Fun. Share Uber-Upbeat ‘Girls’ Soundtrack Song ‘Sight of the Sun’

Fun. Sight of the Sun Girls HBO Some Nights

Last month we got our first taste of HBO comedy Girls’ soundtrack via Santigold’s girls-repping new song, “Girls.” And although Girls, the band, quashed their beef with Girls, the show, they will not be on Girls, the album. Good news for fun-loving girls and guys, however, as fun., the band of New York guys, has shared their exclusive contribution to the HBO comedy about New York girls (and sometimes guys).

Dubbed “Sight of the Sun,” the previously unreleased track is an incredibly sunny, piano-plinking holdover from fun.’s fantastic 2012 LP, Some Nights. According to Rolling Stone, who are currently streaming the song, it’d been nixed from the album’s lineup over an uncleared sample in the original chorus. “We got really dejected and put it away until Lena [Dunham] called,” said singer Nate Ruess of Girls‘ star and creator.

“I ended up rewriting the chorus and actually like it better,” he said. The song finds Ruess leaving one-night stands behind for something more solid. “We recorded most of this in Italy on a day off from tour and I just remember us eating an Italian feast at the studio and barely being able to communicate with the engineers, which was kind of cool because it eliminated all small talk and put the focus into the song.”

Girls – Volume 1: Music from the HBO Original Series is out tomorrow, January 8, while the show’s second season premieres on Sunday, January 13. The two-disc set also features contributions from Fleet Foxes, Robyn, Tegan and Sara, Grouplove, Sleigh Bells, Belle and Sebastian and many, many others. Check out the complete track list here, and stream “Sight of the Sun” now over at Rolling Stone.
