Watch Eels’ Profanity-Laden ‘This Is 40’ Deleted Scene

eels, this is 40

Judd Apatow’s This Is 40 may be getting mixed reviews, but the mid-life crisis comedy’s musical chops are top notch. The soundtrack features work from Wilco, Ryan Adams, Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney, and Fiona Apple; Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong appeared in a deleted scene, playing a dickish version of himself peddling a side-project that sounds like a blend of Norwegian death metal and Glasgow twee-poppers Belle and Sebastian. And now there’s another music industry-assisted outtake, courtesy Eels’ main brain Mark Oliver Everett. The three-and-a-half minute clip is similar to Armstrong’s cameo: an ego trippin’ Everett meets with Paul Rudd, who plays a record executive, and what starts as a promising powwow quickly turns into a profanity-filled confrontation. Everett, the sole fixed member of Eels, follows a heartfelt rendition of gentle ballad “What I Have to Offer” (off 2010’s Tomorrow Morning) with an indignant rant, delivered in the third-person and built around a simple truth: “Eels does not like to get fucked.”
