Cat Power Goes Cloud-Rap With Angel Haze on Dazzling ‘Manhattan’ Remix

Angel Haze, Cat Power, and Ryan Hemsworth

After a health scare last year, Chan Marshall is set to perform tomorrow night at Manhattan venue Terminal 5. A perfect day, then, for the Cat Power singer and songwriter to reveal a remix that’s doubly indebted to New York City’s most storied borough. The newfound electronic pulse of last year’s Essential album Sun lends itself well to remixes, as producer Nicolas Jaar’s mesmerizing “Cherokee” rework demonstrated. Now, ascendant Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth has left his R&B-smeared fingerprints on “Manhattan,” which SPIN’s Jessica Hopper called “Sun‘s absolute standout.” Angel Haze, an adopted New Yorker who prior to a recent beef with Azealia Banks might’ve been best known for her dominating “New York,” seamlessly translates Marshall’s mortality-shadowed Manhattan musings into a ratatat rap verse; according to the label, Haze will join Cat Power at Tuesday’s show. Great cities are forever renewing themselves. So are great songs.
