Bruno Mars wrapped up his two-night stint as musical guest for Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night (January 11) with full-band treatments of “Locked Out of Heaven” and “Treasure,” two cuts from SPIN’s No. 5 Best Pop Album of 2012, Unorthodox Jukebox. Mars and his entourage float the Police-pilfering Hot 100 topper with a buoyancy and crispness not heard on the studio version: live trombone gives way to a drum-rolled bridge, and builds toward a pleading guitar solo strong enough to warrant entry through the pearly gates. The Hawaiian pop crooner also shared his disco-inflected “Treasure” with the outdoor audience, pairing nimble bass and punctual horn hits with synced-up shimmy moves and vocals.
