Hear AlunaGeorge Cover Frank Ocean’s ‘Thinkin Bout You’ in Sexy Synth

Buzzed-about London duo AlunaGeorge dropped by Trevor Nelson’s BBC Radio 1Xtra show today (January 7) for a live in-studio performance of their synthy, club-ready reworking of Frank Ocean’s wobbly channel ORANGE standout, “Thinkin’ ‘Bout You.”

“[Our version] is pretty different from the original,” vocalist Aluna Francis said. “We didn’t want, in any way, to [repeat what Frank Ocean] has already done.” No problem there, since Francis and her partner, producer George Reid, transform Ocean’s teary Album of the Year eulogy into a promising pick-up line, thanks to splashy keyboards, Francis’ come-hither coos, and a 4/4 assist. Hear it below (via SoulCulture).

The British ’90s R&B revivalists also played the twilit title track to their upcoming debut album, Body Music, which is due in June via Island Records. “Body Music” finds the Sound of 2013 poll runners-up in familiar territory, with Grimes-like vocals swathed in clipped samples and deflated pitches. It’s not that dissimilar from “Diver,” another song set to feature on the follow-up to last year’s You Know You Like It EP that was debuted on the BBC last week. According to Pitchfork, this stutter-savvy trip-hop tribute is only a demo version of the song. Either way, it’s a full taste of what to expect, an improvement over the two-minute teaser AlunaGeorge previously previewed. Scroll below to hear radio rips of “Diver” and the aforementioned tracks.
