Metallica Move 2013 Orion Music + More Festival to Detroit

Metallica’s exhilirating and wildly eclectic Orion Music + More Festival will return in 2013, the band announced today (December 20), but contrary to what drummer Lars Ulrich told SPIN earlier this year, the two-day showcase won’t be coming back to Atlantic City, New Jersey. Instead, the heavy metal masters will set up shop in Detroit, Michigan, for the second Orion installment, scheduled for June 8-9. “We had a great experience in New Jersey,” Ulrich said to SPIN over the summer, “and as we look to 2013, we’re definitely looking to keep it in New Jersey or to keep it on the East Coast.” No word on the reason behind the location change, but when your band is the head of its own record label, you can pretty much do whatever you want.

Details on the 2013 edition of Orion Music + More — you know, incidentals like ticket prices, an exact location, and a lineup of performers — will be announced in February. Right now, the festival’s website asks fans to share their ideas for the follow-up to 2012’s inaugural fest via Facebook. Considering that the first go-round featured two headlining sets from Metallica themselves, along with performances by Best Coast, Modest Mouse, Titus Andronicus, Fucked Up, Baroness, Suicidal Tendencies, Sepultura, Avenged Sevenfold, and more, it’d be smart to bet on a diverse crop of artists. Maybe SPIN’s predictions will come true and we’ll get a bill with Cloud Nothings, Slayer, DIIV, Against Me!, Royal Thunder, and (shudder) Daniel Tosh?
