Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp has drafted Tom Waits, Keith Richards, Patti Smith, Courtney Love, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, and more for an upcoming compilation album featuring covers of traditional pirate songs. The two-disc collection, Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys, is a sequel to 2006’s Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys, which Depp put together with record producer Hal Willner and Pirates director Gore Verbinski. That first foray into sea fare included salty cuts from Lou Reed, Sting, Lucinda Williams, actor John C. Reilly, and more. Next year’s entry will wash ashore on February 19 via ANTI-, which also released the original Rogue’s Gallery.

The 36-song LP includes some spirited pairings: Depp with Patti Smith; a duet from Michael Stipe and Courtney Love; Tom Waits teaming with Keith Richards; and Iggy Pop backed by A Hawk and a Hacksaw.

“It is a very different record than volume 1,” Willner said in a press release. “This one seems… happier? Not as much about torture, sodomy, and death, which will disappoint some but, we don’t need to repeat ourselves do we?” The producer added that he found inspiration to lay down the sea dog songs while on the set of 2006’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, with Depp and Verbinski, both of whom executive produced the two Rogue’s Gallery albums. Depp also recently banked some studio time for his contribution to West of Memphis: Voices for Justice, the soundtrack to the upcoming documentary West of Memphis, inspired by the West Memphis Three.

Rolling Stone is now streaming a rendition of the 1885 sing-along “Leaving of Liverpool,” by Depp, Verbinski, and the Pogues’ Shane MacGowan. See the full track list for Son of Rogue’s Gallery below.
