Purity Ring’s “Lofticries” was one of the first songs to put the swoony Canadian trap-pop duo on the map, and it sounds just as sweet on the group’s debut LP Shrines, which Jessica Hopper described as “midnight-black disco sustenance … especially live and fresh.” The new video for the song — directed by AG Rojas (Jack White, Spiritualized, Earl Sweatshirt) — closely follows the movements of four seemingly unrelated people as they stumble upon strange situations without reacting in kind. The short debuted over at Pitchfork, where Rojas explained, rather stoically, “‘Lofticries’ is a music video exploring the stoicism of psychically connected characters confronted by surreal, climactic moments. It is also a song off my favorite album of the year by Purity Ring.” It’s not clear whether he meant that Purity Ring made his favorite album of the year, or that Shrines is his favorite album that Purity Ring made this year — a category of one. The band spends the rest of the month in Europe before picking up again in North America in early 2013.
