“I wanted ‘Death Proof’ to have a Tarantino feel,” English songstress Kate Nash says of the Aram Rappaport-directed clip for her new EP’s titular cut. “But I also love this movie called Freaks so a lot of the inspiration came from that as well: old Bettie Page pictures, travelling circus people, and freak shows.”
Nash and Rappaport had actually worked together last summer in New York on the film Syrup, in which she had a small part. And when she told the Rappaport she’d be in L.A. soon thereafter to record her forthcoming third full-length, Girl Talk (tentatively due March 2013), the young director volunteered his services for every video those sessions would birth.
Though “Death Proof,” Nash says, is a song “metaphorically about heartache,” it’s also about a heart procedure Nash underwent (“part of my heart was actually burnt off because of a heart condition I had growing up”) when she was 17, trauma she was sure to have represented visually here. Like all of the songwork to be found on Girl Talk and the Death Proof EP (both due via her own Have 10p Records, and both available to pre-order now through Pledge Music), it finds Nash embracing an entirely new mode, her piano having been replaced for the time being by a bass guitar.
