How to Make Bob Mould's Tribute Concert Film a Reality

Last November, former Hüsker Dü and Sugar frontman Bob Mould was honored with a star-studded tribute concert at Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall. Dave Grohl, Spoon’s Britt Daniel, No Age, The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn and Tad Kubler, Ryan Adams, stand-up comedian Margaret Cho and singer/songwriter Grant Lee Phillips paid respects to the Twin Cities rock icon by performing songs from his catalog. Now, the 52-year-old solo artist hopes to release a concert film documenting that momentous show using footage captured by Azealia Banks’ “1991” music video director Justin Mitchell.

“Justin and his camera crew followed Bob and the other artists meticulously throughout their day catching the rehearsals, preparation, interactions — and of course the night’s unforgettable performances,” reads the Kickstarter page for See A Little Light: A Celebration of the Music and Legacy of Bob Mould. “There is a significant amount of Bob’s own out-of-pocket money already spent on this project and upcoming costs to make a film of this caliber a reality are high. Due to the special nature of the event, location and performers, we want to ensure that the legacy of this night lives on for as long as possible and is shared with as many Bob fans as possible.”

As of time of writing, the project has raised $26,870 of its $95,000 goal thanks to 440 backers, and has 36 days left before deadline. Mould has set up tiered packages for those who donate. Anyone who pledges $1 will receive updates on the Kickstarter’s status and a “digital hug” from Mould; $5 gets you three unreleased songs from Mould’s February live performance of Sugar’s 1992 debut, Copper Blue; $10 secures a high-quality digital download of See The Light, guaranteed to arrive by December 25. Those willing to venture further up the pay scale and hand over $1,500 or more can count on an autographed blue Stratocaster guitar (with photo of Mould laying down his signature), a personalized thank you note, and a download of the film.
