Sigur Rós’ Mystery Film Experiment, where the angelic Icelandic post-rockers have been encouraging directors to make videos for the music from the band’s 2012 album Valtari, is nearing its big payoff moment.
Yesterday the band announced that Belarus-based director Ruslan Fedotow was the winner of the film competition’s “People’s Choice” honors, for his atmosphere-drenched, visually sumptuous take on the album’s characteristically ethereal “Dauðalognm.” The patient, lovingly handled clip shows two naked men, though nothing is exposed that might draw the scrutiny of an IT department, so make your cubicle viewing decision accordingly.
Sigur Rós will reveal the Mystery Film Experiment’s overall winner on October 12 during a screening as part of the BFI London Film Festival. The winner, who gets a $5,000 cash prize, will be announced to the broader public on October 15 via the contest’s website. Don’t forget that videos from New York City-based photographer Ryan McGinley, who shot Bat for Lashes’ potentially iconic new album cover photo, and Shia LaBeouf are also among those in the running.
