Nirvana’s ongoing multimedia expansion/exploitation might soon hit Broadway. Earlier this week, CBS announced an upcoming sitcom that would be titled Smells Like Teen Spirit. On Wednesday, music industry manager Sam Lutfi took a break from accusing Britney Spears of meth use to reveal plans for a potential Nirvana musical, as the New York Daily News reports.
Lutfi, who is suing the Spears family for libel and other claims, testified in a Los Angeles court that he and Love “are currently working on a possible motion picture or Broadway musical based on the Nirvana catalogue, based on her life and Kurt Cobain’s.” Lutfi is also quoted as saying he “currently co-manage[s] Ms. Love,” whom he described as “an accomplished actress.”
But don’t necessarily look for About a Girl: The Musical in time for the next Tony Awards season. “It’s an idea,” Lutfi told the News after his testimony, declining to go into more detail. A spokesman for Love, who garnered a Golden Globe nod for her performance in 1996’s The People vs. Larry Flynt, reportedly declined to comment on Lutfi’s remarks.
Still, a Love “insider” confirmed to the News that Lutfi does co-manage the Hole frontwoman, and that Love has been mulling a film or play about her life with late Nirvana frontman Cobain for a while. At the very least, she can play this here guitar, a skill that certainly encouraged George Benson about his prospects on Broadway.
