“Only In My Dreams” from the forthcoming Mature Themes by Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti is a frothy confection of ringing guitar, lush background harmonies, and sugary, sock-hop melody. But beguiling as it is, lyrics like, “Dream a little dream about a girl so real / When she don’t call no more / Don’t give up” carve a sinister edge into all the gooey major-key chime and coo. Leave it to Ariel Pink to make a song that grabs your attention because it sounds creepy for being cute. The album is out August 21 on 4AD.
