Best Coast, TV on the Radio, Grouplove Booked for Free Shows at U.S. Open of Surfing

Best Coast

You know what they say about a southern California surf contest without a free concert series to go with it — well, they don’t actually say anything, but if they did, we’d think they’d say, “It’s bound to be less awesome!” Therefore we’re happy to announce the lineup that will accompany Nike’s U.S. Open of Surfing, which goes down July 28 through August 5 in Huntington Beach. This year’s shows will feature SPIN’s very own Outside Issue cover stars, Best Coast, TV on the Radio, and Grouplove during three competition days. SoCal resident or not, don’t worry if you can’t get the vacation days — the whole thing is going to be live-streamed, just like MGMT’s performance was last year.

The series kicks off August 1 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Pacific, once the surfing has ended for the day, when Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno will reprise their Orion Fest shreddage with openers Walk the Moon, brought to you by Converse. Hurley hosts the next day’s artists, also from 4:30 to 6:30, with White Arrows and Hindu Pirates opening for Grouplove, and finally, August 3 has Nike bringing the mini-fest to a close with TV on the Radio supported by Toro y Moi.

Nike says the three-day foray “has grown to be the largest free concert series of the summer,” with “hundreds of thousands of fans” nightly showing up, and it’s all going down right on the sand, so obviously get there early, and maybe take in a couple of events — in addition to surfing, there’s skating too, at the adjacent Converse Coastal Carnage pro/am competition and Damn Am HB showcase. Events that will not be included: snowboarding, skiing, and cat fashion shows. We’re sure you can still bring your Snacks plush, though.

Get hyped for these shows a few months early by looking back at photos from last year’s event.
