See Ane Brun’s Smoky ‘One’ Video

Still from "One"

Ane Brun’s new album, It All Starts With One, finally arrives in the U.S. today, and judging by the video for tumultuous near-title track “One,” what comes next could be revolutionary. The Norwegian-born singer-songwriter’s latest has already reached platinum status in her home country, but its forcefully sung, instrumentally nuanced piano-pop confections ought to find a receptive audience here where people seem to be finally coming around to the greatness of Fiona Apple (although they’re still overlooking Swedish dynamo Jenny Wilson). As Brun’s voice booms and flutters atop subtle orchestration, the video shows a motley cast of characters rushing out for “Act 2” of a stage production that sure looks like more than a mere play. “Revolution from dreams,” Brun repeats, significantly.

It All Starts With One, for which Brun recently won the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy, also features fleet-fingered Swedish-Argentine mystic José González and Americana-bewitched Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit. The album lands stateside in the wake of Brun’s five-song Do You Remember digital EP, which includes covers of songs by Antony & the Johnsons, Built to Spill, and Mercedes Sosa. Following a U.S. tour last year supporting Peter Gabriel, Brun launches her own North American headlining tour tomorrow night with Gemma Ray.
