Snoop Dogg, of all people, knows what day it is, and he doesn’t beat around the proverbial not-quite bush in his latest video (via Yardie). “Stoner’s Anthem,” from Snoop’s new digital-only Stoner’s EP, is a predictably laid-back ode to, well, guess what, with a playful reference to Cee-Lo (Green, get it?) and the mind-expanding revelation that James Brown convinced Compton’s mellowest not to cut his hair. Speaking of which, the simple visuals show Snoop hanging out in a yellow T-shirt and a hairnet, smoking, while the gratuitous displays of his healthy stash amount to weed porn. Calvin Broadus might have been somewhat overshadowed last weekend at Coachella by a projection of the late Tupac, but he’ll be at it again on Sunday night — all the more reason for fans in the Indio, California, desert to stretch their supplies a couple more days. Cough.
For more Snoop, a new video has surfaced for David Banner’s “Californication,” from the Mississippi MC-producer’s May 22 Sex, Drugs, and Video Games mixtape (via Nah Right). The track and the visuals feature the Doggfather himself, plus fellow West Coast rappers Nipsey Hussle, Game, and Ras Kass. Be warned: It’s a weed song of a more paranoid variety.
As for Banner, he’s continuing the recent encouraging trend of hip-hop intersecting with academia. MTV reports the “Play” and “Shawty Say” rapper is set to make an appearance at Harvard University for “The LA Riots: Twenty Years Later Conference,” which takes place on April 27 and 28. Other panelists include Henry Louis Gates Jr. “It is vital that we talk about what we can do to better ourselves and our communities,” Banner’s quoted as saying. Apologies for the sobering thought, but what better time to brainstorm than now that we’re all relaxed?
