Little Big Man: Clarence Clemons’ Nephew Jake Joins Springsteen’s Band

In what seems a staunch effort to keep things in the family, Bruce Springsteen has tapped Jake Clemons, nephew to the late E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons, to share sax duties with longtime E Street collaborator Eddie Manion on the Boss’ upcoming Wrecking Ball tour. The dates, which follow stops at the Grammys and the Apollo Theater will constitute the first Springsteen tour since Clemons’ passing.

Clemons, Jr., has been busy at work, racking up a discography that includes work with the Swell Season (and Markéat Irglová’s side project) and live performance credits that, according to his website, include Eddie Vedder and Will Smith. (Yes, Will Smith.) His headshot, too, via Consequence of Sound, is quite a work of art in itself.

The Boss, on the other hand, has a history of the whole E Street Regeneration thing; in 2009, drummer Max Weinberg was briefly replaced, due to a contract debacle with his post-E Street gig on Late Night With Conan O’Brien, by his son, Jay. (Fun fact: Jay is now the drummer of Against Me!) If this trend continues, one day we’ll all wake up to find that Bruce has retired and announced the debut of Evan Springsteen and the E Street Band.

As it is, Springsteen has also added to the Wrecking Ball Tour lineup veteran Springsteen performers Cindy Mizelle and Curtis King (vocals), Clark Gayton (trombone), Curt Ramm and newbie Barry Danielian (both on trumpet). This is in addition to the previously announced members of the E Street Band, Max Weinberg, Roy Bittan (piano, synthesizer), Nils Lofgren (guitar, vocals), Patti Scialfa (guitar, vocals), Garry Tallent (bass), Stevie Van Zandt (guitar/vocals), Soozie Tyrell (violin, guitar, vocals), and Charlie Giordano (keyboards).

Check out Springsteen’s recently released single "We Take Care of Our Own," which makes an appearance on President Obama’s 2012 Spotify campaign playlist, here, and check out the band’s tour dates below.
