Gotye Drops Head-Spinning ‘Easy Way Out’ Video

Gotye has returned to the medium that helped make the Belgian-Austrlian electro-popper a global sensation — YouTube — and the results are dizzying. At last count, the video for the Police-esque “Somebody That I Used to Know,” from the SPIN Breaking Out subject‘s latest album Making Mirrors, had racked up nearly 90 million views. The album finally received a U.S. physical release earlier this year, and Gotye is set to descend up on the states for a tour that culminates at Coachella. What better time to go back to what got him here?

According to Your Music Radar, the clip for Making Mirrors cut “Easy Way Out” was nine months in the making. Produced by Melbourne’s Oh Yeah Wow with Sydney studio PictureDrift, the clip involves lavish stop-motion animation and a 360-degree panning effect similar to that of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ recent “Look Around” video. It’s an impressive visual feast centering on a twisted view of everyday life and set to Gotye’s sumptuously arranged, eclectic pop. The only easy way out, if there is one, is the sudden stop at the end.
