Kimya Dawson, ‘Thunder Thighs’ (Burnside Distribution)

Kimya Dawson may have the most earnest voice in indie rock. On her self-released seventh solo album, the former Moldy Peach sings bluntly about topics most folks avoid: becoming a mother (from the pee test onward), getting and staying sober, mourning friends and oil-spill sea turtles alike. She’s got punk-rock incision but a granola heart, calling out a common enemy (self-righteous hippies) and plopping a sing-along kids’ song right after the one about her near-death overdose a decade ago. Crushing cool remove with offhanded goofiness and mid-song fart jokes, Dawson keeps Thunder Thighs from becoming too precious or intense.
