Ke$ha Talks New Album, CBGB Movie + More

  • For her follow-up to 2010’s Animal, Ke$ha says she will be moving away from synth-heavy dance-pop for songs inspired by ’70s arena rock. “It’s gonna be balls-out, irreverent rock’n’roll,” she said. “I’ve been pretty much in this ’70s rock’n’roll kick and I just want to capture…irreverence and sexiness and fun and not giving a fuck.” [MTV]

  • New York’s iconic punk club CBGB and its late owner Hilly Kristal will be remembered in a new movie tentatively titled CBGB that’s slated to begin production this fall. The movie will look at the punk mecca’s ’70s heyday, where Talking Heads, the Ramones, Television, and Patti Smith got their start. Kristal’s daughter Lisa will co-produce the project. [Billboard]

  • In a story in this week’s New Yorker, writer Kelefa Sanneh has located Odd Future‘s Earl Sweatshirt, the rap collective member whose whereabouts have remained a mystery until now. (Complex magazine unearthed a photo of him back in April.) In the piece, Sanneh reveals that Sweatshirt’s real name is Thebe Neruda Kgositsile and is the son of celebrated South African poet Keorapetse Kgositsile. Sweatshirt reveals that he is cagey about plans to return to performing with Odd Future. “I don’t have any definite date,” he said. “Even if I did I don’t know if I’d tell you.” [The New Yorker]

  • Synth-pop whiz Toro Y Moi has announced plans to tour behind his new album Underneath the Pine for late summer. Leader Chaz Budnick will hit the road for a 23-date trek on September 9 in Athens, GA; the tour ends on October 14 in Atlanta, GA. [Pitchfork]

  • Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Keith Richards, Mark Ronson, Panic! at the Disco, and other top artists have teamed up with designer Ben Sherman for an auction to benefit Lifebeat, which raises awareness about HIV/AIDS. The artists will auction off signed guitar picks along with a personal note about where the pick was used and a personal photo; the items will be housed in a collector’s frame.
