Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi, ‘Rome’ (Capitol)

Danger Mouse says this sumptuous tribute to old-school Italian movie music traces back to the salad days of his bootleg Beatles/Jay-Z mash-up, The Grey Album. (The producer’s partner here, film-score composer Daniele Luppi, was evidently a big fan.) Yet with its plush, lounge-soul sonics and guest-vocal shots from Jack White and Norah Jones – not to mention the presence of a so-called “visual director” – Rome has the undeniably high-end vibe of an A-lister’s lark. After all, what kind of no-name can book the recording studio once employed by Ennio Morricone?
