Prefab Sprout, ‘Let’s Change the World With Music’ (Tompkins Square)

In 1992, Prefab Sprout leader Paddy McAloon envisioned an album about God and his manifestation through music and love. He never got around to recording it with his bandmates, but this lush, keyboard-driven demo nevertheless plays out like a masterwork. The gentle sophistication of the chords is matched by the sincerity of the delivery. McAloon sings softly and openheartedly, as if praying, and when he writes of watchful spirits, the melodies soar and flutter like the flapping of guardian angel wings.
