Girls, ‘Broken Dreams Club’ (True Panther)

Last year’s debut from these gentle San Franciscans achieved a threadbare eloquence not because they craved lo-fi but because they were articulate and broke. Greeted with acclaim, Girls invested their newfound income on this half-hour EP, boasting Latin boogaloo horns, weeping pedal steel, and an expanded stylistic palate that unites Gram Parsons, the Smiths, and countless Brylcreemed pre-Beatles crooners. Yet singer Christopher Owens remains unchanged: Choked on teen melodrama and blessed with a documentarian’s keen eye, he’s the rare indie rocker with a tender hooligan’s heart.
