Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week: ‘Glee’ Edition!

101007-twitter-trio.jpg

Lots of musicians tweet — but all that Twitters is not gold.

That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week — then update your TweetDeck! (Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)

This week, in honor of Glee‘s second season, which just started a few weeks ago, we’re following some of our favorite New Directions show-stoppers. If you’re looking for more cast members to follow, check out our previous Glee edition, featuring Chris Colfer, Dianna Agron, and Cory Monteith! Then watch the show when it airs every Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST.

  • Lea Michele
    @msleamichele

    Who: Lea Michele (@msleamichele)

    Why You Should Follow: Her character, Rachel Berry, is the show’s resident drama queen, a tiny girl with a big voice and an even bigger ego — but on Twitter, Lea Michele is nothing if not down-to-earth. Even when she’s hopping from awards shows to PETA benefits to Paris fashion events, she always manages to seem like just another 24-year-old girl — albeit one who made her Broadway debut at age 9 and celebrated her last birthday on the red carpet at the Emmys. She tweets about living la vie vegan, being a Paramore fanatic (“@yelyahwilliams I’ve been dying to do @Paramore on Glee! You guys are the best. I’m a huge fan…well I’m actually obsessed”), and pinching herself every time a Glee cover makes it to No. 1 on iTunes (“Am I still sleeping or is Empire State really #1 on iTunes right now!!! Omg! That’s so awesome!!!”). She also posts some pretty awesome backstage TwitPics — like this one of the entire cast (plus Season 2 guest star John Stamos!) and this one of her and on-screen boyfriend Cory Monteith. Bonus points: She often uses her Twitter to bring awareness to animal rights issues, like the mistreatment of carriage ride horses and animals in zoos.

    Best Tweet of the Week: “Emotional glee last night! I used a couple of boxes of tissues!”

  • Amber Riley
    @msamberpriley

    Who: Amber Riley (@msamberpriley)

    Why You Should Follow: On Glee, she plays Mercedes Jones, one of the group’s most talented singers and a force to be reckoned with (she famously stood up to evil cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester and dumped Puck for being a bully). She’s got her character’s confidence and take-no-bullshit attitude in real life, too — at least on Twitter. She’s not afraid to make a stand against the tabloids (“They say ur not famous until a CRAPPY Rag Mag starts writing LIES about you… Welp looks like we made it GLEEKS lmbo!”), admit that she buys some of her clothes at Target and feels shy around other celebrities, or tell certain people to #Getalife (“Lol ppl take social networks too seriously! Y get offended because someone doesn’t follow u or didn’t ‘friend’ u on facebook LMBO!”). Look out for plenty of tweets from Riley about pre-performance jitters, meeting her idols (“Chaka Khan gave me a kiss and said so LOVED me! I am the happiest girl in the world”), and hanging out with her family (her younger brother, Kenny, is an aspiring singer, and she often uses Twitter to promote his music). Bonus points: She sometimes responds to her fan’s tweets, so go ahead and tell her how much you liked her rendition of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”!

    Best Tweet of the Week: “please send a thank you and a shout out to @adamanders he is the music wizard behind Glee ! You make us sound amazing, were in gr8 hands :)”

  • Mark Salling
    @Mark_Salling

    Who: Mark Salling (@Mark_Salling)

    Why You Should Follow: He plays Puck, a football star turned reluctant show choir singer on Glee, but in real life, Mark Salling has always been all about the music. In fact, he has a solo music project called Jericho and plans to release his second album, Pipe Dreams, this month. His tweets are mostly music-related, too — he waxes poetic about the “golden age” of rock and hip-hop (the ’90s), introduces his followers to new bands and artists (like the indie rock band AWOLNATION, who he watched at L.A.’s Viper Room recently), and posts Twitvids of street performers (“This guy performs every day on the streets just for the sake of performing, u gotta appreciate that, true artist”). You’ll always find something interesting on Salling’s Twitter feed, whether it’s video art by reclusive street artist Blu, a Twitpic from the Glee dressing room, or a random thought about the escape artist Houdini or the movie Amadeus. Bonus points: He always remembers to give shout-outs to his fans — especially the ones who come out to see him perform as Jericho!

    Best Tweet of the Week: “Why does freakin snooki have way more followers than lea michele? That’s messed up”
