Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week

Lots of musicians tweet – but all that Twitters is not gold.

That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week – then update your TweetDeck! (Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)

This week’s winners:

  • Frankie Rose
    @MissFrankieRose

    Who: Frankie Rose (@MissFrankieRose)

    Why You Should Follow: She may have made a name for herself as a drummer – for bands like Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls, and Dum Dum Girls – but Frankie Rose is comfortable being in the spotlight, too. She and her new band, the retro-pop girl group Frankie Rose and the Outs , just released their self-titled debut album, and in true frontwoman fashion, Frankie has been reppin’ the band on Twitter. She posts Twitpics of L.A. pool parties and sleeping tour-mates, tells tales of peeing on BMWs and filming music videos, and live-tweets her way through crazy, boozy nights full of pink lemonade vodka and 5 a.m. haircuts. Her tweets are sometimes absurd (“How am I gonna get this corn syrup out of my weave?”), sometimes relatable (“If I keep eating at pies and thighs my ass is gonna be the size of Texas by next week”), and almost always entertaining.

    Best Tweet of the Week: “Man at mexican border – ‘you have very pretty eyes but no chicherones’ a.k.a tits… Can’t win em all.”

  • Girls
    @GIRLSsf

    Who: Girls (@GIRLSsf)

    Why You Should Follow: This San Francisco-based duo is relatively new to the Twitter scene; they joined the social-networking site more than a year ago, but only started tweeting regularly about two weeks ago. Currently in between albums and tours, they’ve got another project in the works (“Lease is signed! Girls are building a recording studio!!”), so they’ve been posting lots of pictures of newly-acquired instruments (their “new members”) and reaching out to people they’d like to collaborate with, like up-and-coming rapper Lil B (“Let’s break in the new studio with a song. Their next album, a follow-up to last summer’s breakout Album, is due sometime later this year, so look out for plenty of tweets from Girls as they figure out the release date and get ready to drop the first single. And make sure to check out their absurd Twitpics, like this one of a tightie-whities-and-PBR-filled “boy’s night” with two of the members of the Smith Westerns, a Chicago-based band that opened for Girls during their last tour.

    Best Tweet of the Week: “Anyone wanna spare 16 channels of neve, calrec, quad eight etc? Find me a discreet mixer that aint too big.”

  • Ray Suen
    @rayrayagogo

    Who: Mariachi El Bronx’s Ray Suen (@rayrayagogo)

    Why You Should Follow: Ray Suen is a modern-day Renaissance man: He plays violin, keyboards, guitar, and mandolin, has toured with bands like Louis XIV, the Killers, and the Flaming Lips, and is the violinist for the L.A. punk band Mariachi El Bronx. Plus, he’s a dedicated foodie who often tweets his take on local restaurants, along with food porn shots of the dishes he eats (recent examples include hiyashi chu-ka, fish tacos, and a towering deli sandwich). Suen is the kind of guy who exchanges tweets with the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne (@waynecoyne) and has what he calls “David Lynch moments” (“Just got rung up by the indian or pakistani david bowie of 7 eleven cashiers”). He tweets regularly throughout each day, making note of the things that impress, interest, surprise, baffle, and randomly occur to him (“If I didn’t keep such weird hours, I wouldn’t get to see nearly as much drunk Thai karaoke when I pick up my dinner”).

    Best Tweet of the Week: “i need a card i can carry around that says ‘certified bachelor.’ didn’t have a corkscrew so jammed the cork into the bottle. wine everywhere”
